Orbiscite

Orbiscite is an interactive 3D globe of global research activity, mapping scholarly publication output by institution. Spin the globe to see where the world's research is concentrated, and filter it by research area and time period.

Each marker is a research institution, sized by its publication output. Filters combine freely: choose a research area from the OpenAlex Field → Subfield → Topic taxonomy (from Oncology to Astrophysics to Economics, and everything between), and set a year range across 2013–2025, to reweight the globe to the leading institutions for that slice.

All publication data comes from OpenAlex (CC0) and spans every field of research it indexes, across all of its science domains. Orbiscite is a free, static web app — it requires a modern browser with JavaScript and WebGL.
